SEED Program Journey in New Brunswick Community College

Alyanna GumabonBeing chosen as one of the grantees of the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) program feels like holding a golden ticket—one of those rare and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that can change the course of a person’s journey. I am deeply honored to have been entrusted with this chance, which allowed me to pursue the studies I am most passionate about. At New Brunswick Community College – Saint John Campus, I enrolled in Business Administration: Accounting, stepping into a world beyond the familiar borders of my home country, the Philippines.

Leaving behind everything close to my heart was not easy. It felt like I needed to carry a suitcase filled not only with clothes but with the warmth of home. Yet, the moment I arrived in New Brunswick, Canada, I realized that this leap was worth every ounce of faith I had. The people welcomed us with open arms: the coordinators, instructors, and classmates at New Brunswick Community College made us feel not like newcomers, but like peers who wanted us to feel included. Their support and willingness to guide us reminded me that even in a foreign land, one can find a nurturing environment in which to grow.

I was amazed by how Canadians take pride in their culture, raising their flags high in simple and everyday ways. It was a beautiful reminder of how love for one’s country can be expressed in daily life. And as Filipinos, we found comfort in meeting fellow kababayans who made the place feel even more familiar and warm.

This journey was not only about academics, but it was also about life itself. With my friends Champaine and Aleah by my side, we explored the province, traveled to new places, and created memories that I will cherish forever. Experiencing summer, fall, and a taste of winter was like watching nature paint its canvas anew each time. Coming from a tropical country, these changes felt magical, reminding me that shifting seasons reflect the endless transformations we can face in life.

The program challenged me in ways I never imagined. It pushed me beyond my comfort zone, teaching me to embrace new experiences, to connect with new people, and to grow in confidence. What once felt daunting became a source of renewal, like starting fresh in a new environment and gradually becoming more capable.

This four-month milestone is, by far, the biggest leap I have taken in my journey as a student. As part of the pioneering batch of SPUQC to be sent abroad for student mobility, I carry the hope that future scholars will also seize this opportunity wholeheartedly. To those who will follow, I proudly share this: step forward with courage, let go of the “what ifs,” and embrace the unknown, for I know that you can do it too! The world is waiting to show you its wonders, and this program is the bridge that will take you there.
